“Sources close to the movie say that Skywalker will at long last bring to a climax the millennia-long conflict between the Jedi Order and its dark shadow, the Sith.”
Lev Grossman Vanity Fair
Lets just take a moment to take those words in…
The climax of the millennia-long conflict between the Jedi and the Sith.
The Sith have always been the villains in the franchise we have watched and loved, whether it be Vader, Palpatine/Sidious, Maul or the Empire (the stooges of the Sith), it has all been a part of the ongoing Jedi/Sith war.
And now it’s coming to an end.
But where do we go from there? Who will our dastardly villains be moving forward.
My assumption that if we go back in time with the Benioff and Weiss or the Rian Johnson films the Sith will play a major role but what about the future of the Galaxy? Who will be the antagonists of the inevitable Episodes 10 – 12, which won’t be a continuation of the ‘Skywalker Saga’ but will pick up the story of the survivors of ‘The Rise of Skywalker‘.
The Sith have been fantastic villains throughout the Saga and have all been memorable in their own rights. But who could take that place moving forward?
Dark Side user? I doubt it, they would just be a poor-mans Sith Lord with a generic Sci-Fi sounding name (anyone remember Xanatos from the Jedi Apprentice book series). Once we have seen the Sith in action surely a lesser Dark Side user would pale in comparison. True, Kylo Ren and Snoke are not Sith but it’s possible there is a Sith connection with Palpatine in ‘The Rise of Skywalker‘.
The Chiss? This I wouldn’t be opposed to. An introduction of the Chiss in films would be great and I hope to see it one day but are they a powerful enough villain to make a whole trilogy with them as the main antagonists? It might work but they could just become a new Empire/First Order without the Sith at the top, and for what it’s worth, in the Thrawn novels we’ve had in the past couple of years, I don’t get the feeling that the Chiss are about galactic domination.
On the other hand, there are The Grysk, who we learn about in the novel ‘Thrawn: Alliances‘ who are a race that even the Chiss believe to be a myth that, like the Chiss come from the Unknown Regions. In the first of the new Thrawn novels, Thrawn warns the Emperor of a danger that comes from beyond, could he have been talking about the Grysk, who have proven to be worthy adversaries and return in ‘Thrawn: Treason’ but if the threat of the Grysk is kept only in the novels then perhaps there is something else out there, beyond the Unknown Regions.
The Yuuzahn Vong? Well it’s unlikely that we will get a group of antagonists hell bent on changing the Galaxy into their image of self harm and torture who can’t be sensed through The Force and whose arsenal is made up of living weapons that withstand a lightsaber and their ships have shields that are like mini-black holes. BUT!!! What if the new antagonists of Episodes 10 – 12 are loosely based on the Vong. Take away the torture and self mutilation and you have an interesting group of villains, there was, at one point, character designs of Yuuzahn Vong done for ‘The Clone Wars’ after all.
Change the name of course but think about it, the premise of the Vong was pretty good and we’d need something new and different for the heroes to face and these guys could fit the bill, just with some alterations. A brand new threat to the Galaxy that our heroes know nothing about? Boom! On to a winner because it opens up so much potential. But let’s just forget about those Ooglith Masquers that they wore to disguise themselves… and whilst they make their way across the Galaxy, they can’t kill Chewbacca with a Moon.
Mandalorians? It’s possible. We know nothing of Mandalore after we see them in the fourth season of ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and ‘The Mandalorian’ is set closer to the Original Trilogy than the Sequel Trilogy or beyond so we don’t know if they have returned to their warrior ways and rather than take on the Galaxy they hunt down whatever the post Sequel Trilogy Force Users are called? We know that Mandalorians and Jedi have clashed in the past, so why couldn’t it happen again in the future?
Of course this is all purely speculation and I will continue to speculate on the possibility of Episodes 10 – 12 and what stories those films could give us, but if it does happen it won’t be for a very, very long time (I’d say a good 10 years).
