The Rise of Skywalker Trailer Breakdown and Musings

Did you know that we got a teaser trailer and a title for the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’? Well it came as a bit of a shock to me when they snuck that out at some little fan expo called ‘Star Wars: Celebration’.

Ok, I can’t keep that up. But let’s take a look at the TRAILER before we start.

So the teaser was amazing, every shot was so perfectly placed it’s as if the Gods themselves crafted it.

Not only did it continue the tradition of the Sequel Trilogy teasers having heavy breathing over the Lucasfilm logo, it also beautifully mirrored the teaser trailer for ‘The Phantom Menace’ with its use of the same title card that reads ‘Every Generation Has a Legend’, obviously referring to Anakin and Rey in their respective trilogies.

The opening sequence of Rey in the desert, igniting the repaired (and smaller looking) Legacy Lightsaber as a new or modified TIE Silencer rushes towards her low to the ground which ends with her leaping into the air and flipping, cutting before we see the end of the manoeuvre but already causing tonnes of speculation. Is she evading an attack, a dream, are her and Kylo training or, and this is what I believe, she is leaping and about to land on the ship and her and Kylo are going somewhere, possibly in the third act of the film.

At the same time we get Luke’s voiceover, “We’ve passed on all we know.”

WE! As in more that one! Luke (obviously), Yoda (possibly), Obi-Wan (maybe), Anakin (hopefully).

And Luke continues, “A thousand generations live in you now.” As Obi-Wan said in ‘A New Hope’, “For a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.” How would this be possible if only Luke was teaching her, as much as he had travelled the Galaxy in search of knowledge about the Jedi and the Force I doubt he would have accumulated that much information and so I believe there have been other teachers.

“But this is your fight.”

Who is she fighting? Kylo? Or someone else?

We then see a ship, that is reminiscent of either an A-Wing OR the ship that young Rey sees flying away in her Force Vision in ‘The Force Awakens’ flying towards a settlement at night that looks to be near a mountain range.

We cut to Kylo in a wooded area on a planet with a red sky in the midst of a battle, with First Order Stormtroopers in the distance. A mysterious attacker runs towards Kylo who uses the cross-guard of his lightsaber to impale the attacker and throw them to the ground. I have seen speculation that this attacker could be a member of the Knights of Ren, the outfit looks similar to what we saw in the leaked poster and the hand held weapon reminiscent of one they could use.

The next shot is of Kylo’s helmet being repaired by someone that doesn’t seem to be Kylo. A Knight of Ren maybe?

We’re back in the desert for the shot of Finn and Poe in their new adventure outfits standing around a big rock in the desert location and it looks like Finn is holding Rey’s staff.

After that we get to see BB-8 and this new friend D-O looking at something off screen looking rather intrigued in an excellent display of puppetry. They could be watching a conversation between the main characters as they are figuring out what they have to do next on their adventure.

Then we get the Falcon flying through hyperspace before cutting to the interior of the cockpit and we get a happy, chuckling Lando flying the ship with a headset on, possibly talking to someone in tone of the gun turrets? I am so happy to see Lando back in the Falcon, Billy Dee Williams looks great and I’m excited to see him back in Star Wars.

We’re back on the desert planet next in the midst of a Chase where Finn, Poe and C-3PO are on a skiff of some sort being pursued by either the First Order or some locals who aren’t happy they are around.

An A-Wing is hit and in flames. Rumour has it that in the background there is a Clone Wars era Republic Venator Cruiser but I’ve not seen it yet so I can’t confirm, but it would be really cool if it was there and they used old Clone Wars ships.

Next up is Leia holding one of the Yavin Medals on a Jungle planet followed by Leia and Rey hugging as Rey starts to cry. It’s amazing that they have shown Leia this early on in the promotion of the film and the footage looks well done.

The Luke voiceover returns. “We’ll always be with you.” Who will? Luke? Leia? Other Force Ghosts?

And finally, stood on the grassy cliff, Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, BB-8, D-O and C-3PO looking across an ocean to some very familiar wreckage. Remains of The Death Star. Speculation leads me to believe that it is the Second Death Star and they are on the Forest Moon of Endor.

Luke says the last of his voiceover, repeating what he said to Leia on Crait, “No one is ever really gone.”

The screen goes black and we hear the familiar cackle of Emperor Palpatine before the music swells and the title appears.

Overall this is a solid Teaser Trailer that gives us a good look at the main heroes and poses a number of questions for us fans to speculate over. Visually it looks great, a mix of ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi’ cinematography that looks stunning and we get a quick look at the triumphant return of Lando Calrissian piloting the Falcon and a quick introductory shot of the new Droid D-O.

The title is ambiguous but fitting and I can’t wait so find kid what it means.
